Green Roof Tour at Kingsland Wildflowers followed by a lecture on the Historical Ecology and Future Sustainability of Newtown Creek by Dr. Eric W. Sanderson
Hosted by NYC Soil & Water Conservation District
Dr. Eric W. Sanderson, director of the Mannahatta and Welikia Projects at the Wildlife Conservation Society, will discuss the latest findings on the historical geography and ecology of the Newtown Creek watershed, between Brooklyn and Queens. He will describe how he and his colleagues are reconstructing the pre-development ecology, c. 1609, and how that work informs efforts to envision future sustainability via New York City Nature Goals 2050, a collaborative project with the Natural Areas Conservancy, and a new, on-line ecological democracy platform, visionmaker.nyc.
Refreshments will be served.
Sanderson is a Senior Conservation Ecologist in the Global Conservation Programs of the Wildlife Conservation Society and adjunct faculty at NYU and Columbia University.
